THE ROAD TO THE TROPHY

Four matches. Two routes to the final.

The IPL 2026 playoffs ran from 26 to 31 May across Dharamshala, Mullanpur and Ahmedabad. Royal Challengers Bengaluru won both their matches; Gujarat Titans recovered from a Qualifier 1 defeat to meet them again in the final. Rajasthan Royals won the Eliminator before losing Qualifier 2, while Sunrisers Hyderabad exited after one match. Each result below links to its match report.

Who won IPL 2026? The final in Ahmedabad

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BENGALURU161/518 overs · Champions

Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the IPL winner for 2026. They beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on 31 May. Gujarat made 155/8 from their 20 overs; Bengaluru completed the chase at 161/5 in 18 overs. The winning margin is expressed in wickets because RCB batted second and reached the target with five wickets still available.

Virat Kohli finished on 75 not out and was named Player of the Match in the season account used by the project dossier. The asterisk in 75* means that he was not dismissed. The final score is higher than the target of 156; the target identifies what the chasing side needed, while 161 is the total recorded at the end of the match. These are different numbers with different jobs on a scorecard.

RCB had also finished first in the league, with 18 points and a net run rate of +0.783. Winning the league stage did not itself award the trophy: they still needed to win Qualifier 1 and the final. Their 2026 success followed a six-run win against Punjab Kings in the 2025 final, making this a second consecutive championship.

26 MAY · HPCA STADIUM

Qualifier 1: RCB 254/5 against GT

First met second at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. Royal Challengers Bengaluru scored 254/5 in 20 overs, then dismissed Gujarat Titans for 162 in 19.3 overs. The difference between the totals was 92 runs, sending RCB directly into the final. Rajat Patidar was Player of the Match.

The season article cited in the dossier, referring to a Times of India report dated 26 May 2026, describes 254/5 as the highest innings total in IPL playoff history. That is a playoff record, not a claim about every match ever played in the competition. The distinction matters when comparing this result with the broader IPL records.

For Gujarat, defeat did not end the tournament. Their second-place league finish earned a place in Qualifier 1 and, with it, another opportunity through Qualifier 2. A heavy loss in this match and elimination are therefore not the same thing. The next step for GT was a meeting with the Eliminator winner in Mullanpur.

Eliminator: RR 243/8 against SRH

RAJASTHAN ROYALS243/820 overs · Through to Qualifier 2
SUNRISERS HYDERABAD19619.2 overs · Eliminated

Rajasthan Royals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 47 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium, Mullanpur, on 27 May. RR posted 243/8 from 20 overs and SRH were all out for 196 in 19.2. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi received the Player of the Match award, according to the season account in the dossier.

This was the match between third and fourth in the league. Hyderabad had earned 18 points, two more than Rajasthan, but a higher league position did not rescue them after a completed defeat. The Eliminator gives neither participant the extra route available to the top two. Rajasthan advanced; Hyderabad's season ended.

The result also illustrates why league form and a playoff outcome should be read separately. RR qualified in fourth with 16 points and then beat a side above them. Sooryavanshi's match award is separate from his season-long batting award; his 776 runs and Orange Cap are covered on the Orange Cap page. No individual innings score for this match is supplied here because the dossier does not provide one.

Qualifier 2: Gujarat Titans chase 215

RR set the target214/620 oversGT completed the chase219/318.4 oversShubman Gill104Runs

Gujarat Titans returned to the final with a seven-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals on 29 May. Rajasthan made 214/6 in 20 overs at Mullanpur, setting a target of 215. Gujarat reached 219/3 in 18.4 overs, with Shubman Gill scoring 104. In cricket notation, 18.4 means 18 completed overs and four balls; it is not a decimal measure of overs.

This match completed Gujarat's second-chance route. They lost to RCB in Qualifier 1, met the Eliminator winners, and won the right to face Bengaluru again. Rajasthan's win over Hyderabad had kept their campaign alive, but losing here ended it one match short of the final.

The dossier confirms Gill's century but does not confirm the Player of the Match for Qualifier 2. We therefore do not attach that award to him or to another player. A large individual contribution and an official match award are distinct facts, even when the same person might plausibly hold both.

The league table supplies four qualifiers, but not four identical routes. First and second play Qualifier 1. Its winner goes straight to the final, while its loser waits for the winner of the Eliminator between third and fourth. Those two teams meet in Qualifier 2 for the remaining place in the championship match.

Finishing in the top two is valuable because a team can lose its opening playoff and still win the tournament. Gujarat Titans demonstrated the first part of that route in 2026: defeat by 92 runs in Qualifier 1, followed by a successful chase against Rajasthan. RCB took the shorter route, winning Qualifier 1 and then the final.

A tied playoff is decided by a Super Over, with further Super Overs if needed. If a result remains impossible, the team placed higher in the league progresses under clauses 16.11.1–16.11.2 of the 2026 Playing Conditions. This fallback is not a replacement for playing out a match that can produce a result.

The league-table tie-break rules and the playoff fallback answer different questions. League points, wins and net run rate establish the seedings before the knockout stage. Once the playoffs begin, completed match results determine who advances. Playoff totals do not feed back into league points or league NRR; use the NRR calculator for the rate calculation, not for deciding a knockout winner.

RCB, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad all finished on 18 points with nine wins. Net run rate separated them: +0.783, +0.695 and +0.524 respectively. That ordering placed RCB and GT in Qualifier 1, while Hyderabad entered the Eliminator. Rajasthan completed the top four with eight wins and 16 points.

Punjab Kings finished fifth on 15 points, one behind Rajasthan. PBKS had a higher NRR than RR, but points took priority. A better rate could not overturn the one-point gap. The threshold shown here is the actual outcome of the 2026 league, not a guaranteed qualification target for another season.

3 June · Ahmedabad · RCB won by 6 runs

RCB's first title came at the same venue a year earlier. In the 2025 final at Ahmedabad on 3 June, their 190/9 was enough to beat Punjab Kings, who finished on 184/7. Krunal Pandya was Player of the Match, and the season account records an attendance of 91,419.

The two victories used different paths to a result: Bengaluru defended a total in 2025 and completed a chase in 2026. Both count as one title. Together they put RCB alongside Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians among teams with consecutive championships.
